
Husbands regardless of their incomes are the main abusers to women in Bahrain, according to a recent study by the Supreme Council for Women. Although abuse against women occurred in families from different living conditions, but according the study that covered 300 women (16 years and above) there is close relation between the amount of monthly income of families and the physical abuses cases as such abuse incidents are higher in families with low salaries.
The study shows that many husbands were practicing their abusive acts by stopping the monthly allowances of their wives as punishment, while rich males are more verbally abusive, then poor. Some husbands go to an extend of raping their wives for humiliation or punishments.Among abuse cases covered in the study, 12.1 per cent were verbal abuses, 11.6 per cent disrespect of women, 9.3 per cent lack of communications while the rest are cases of kicking out from the house and physical punishments.
Women included in the study said that the main reasons for abuses were to show males’ power over women and social upbringing of men.The study highlighted the misinterpretation of Islamic principles by some men that think that physically abusing their wives to disciple them.The contemporary women with their educational and financial independency make them fight the abnormal control of men and the unbalance relation of power between couple.
The study also highlighted that the abuse against women could be attributed to men's jealousy of the success and achievements of their wives.Some women covered in the study said that mothers had direct role in promoting male children to be violent or abusers in their adulthood by teaching them wrong behaviours about how should they treat women.
Sex considers important factor for abuse as 80 per cent of women in the study expressed the relation between sexual disturbances with their partners to the verbal and financial abuse they are exposed to. Since the seventies with the establishments of more women's societies, abuse against women started to be much talked about issue.
